Malvern Star SuperMax, Maxi and Speedwell Sting

While researching information for my '81 SuperMax, '83 Speedwell Sting and up-coming '79 5-Hole gusset builds, I got so sick of finding information then losing it again that I started copying images of bikes, parts and advertising material into a single place. To assist others, I have reproduced this information over the following pages .. most of the information can be found on OzBMX and BMXMuseum and I am not pretending that this informtion will replace either of these valuable resources.

Please browse through all of the material I have collected:

If you have any Malvern Star or Speedwell information or photos, please forward them to me and I will add them to the site. I am especially interested in brochures and advertisements as these are most valuable when restoring bikes back to their original glory.

Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame: Malvern Star SuperMax Series II

The second generation of SuperMax dispensed with the distinctive gusset of the original model for a more modern look. Whereas the rest of the bike world had moved to modern manufacturing techniques, Malvern Star continued to make bikes using old fashioned methods of pinning and brazing the tubes together.

OzBMXBandit has two bikes in the Hall of Fame - this BMX Bandits SuperMax and the clean Maxi shown above. This bike has incredible attention to detail from the beautifully annodised Takagi chainring guard through to the original flick bell.

So his wife didn't feel left out, Clayton built this bike for her for Christmas - Malvern Stars all round. As with the son's bike, this bike is a mixture of original parts and reproduction meaning its a rider and not some pampered show pony.

This is one of my bikes. I started building this bike as a tribute to BMX Bandits but was disappointed once complete that the yellow tuffs originally fitted did not match the other plastic components, such as the seat and grips. The Tuffs were very overpowering and I sold them and fitted Arayas laced to gold hubs and nipples. Overall, the bike is a lot more subtle than the original..

Zuno555 has restored this Maxi / SuperMax using most of the original parts that came with the bike .. but its not finished yet, new parts yet to be fitted include decals, correct brakes and a set of Tange 1200 forks to complete the transition from Maxi to SuperMax. The restoration is documented in the section restorations.

When restoring his Series II SuperMax JV911 must have consulted Zuno555 (above) when choosing a colour scheme .. having said that, the red and black combination is really effective.

Built to sell, Arthur's Series II is fitted with some nice and practical parts. The blue and red colour scheme is really effective and the colour coded cranks tie in nicely.

Hot on the heels of the black SuperMax CrMo (featured above) JV911 has added this red and white Series II SuperMax. Like the black CrMo, minimal chrome gives the bike an updated look while still keeping it essentially original.

Not just another BMX Bandits bike - Two Hip's Series II SuperMax is nearly all original from the Alps Bars, Nitto MX2 Stem, Tange Forks, Shimano Tourney brakes right down to the NOS pad set.

As a proud sponsor of OzBMX and online store owner, BMXWorks has access to a lot of new and reproduction parts but don't be fooled, this bike has more NOS and restored parts than not.

Not content with just one pristine SuperMax (in white and gold, here), BMXWorks has built up a second SuperMax in white with red accessories to match - and there is a third one in blue on the way!

As a boy, Lewis owned a blue and white 1979 Series II SuperMax and had it for 30 years until it was stolen. He replaced it with this pristine example that he bought from BMXWorks and set about completing the restoration with some NOS parts including the Kashimax seat.

David's BMX Bandit replica is a nice blend of original, NOS, restored and new parts. The frame was powder-coated before being fitted with some of Lixy's decals and fitted to original Tange TRX forks. A number of parts were re-anno'd by Benny at Strike a Shine including the WIN handlebars, Tange seat clamp and Takagi Chain guard.

Not another black and gold SuperMax! Scotty's example is original right down to the the OGK grips and original Tuff reflectors. Other original parts include the KKT lightnings, Nitto MXII stem, Takagi cranks and chainguard, Tange seat clamp and Win bars. Beautiful!

Compare Lewis' black and gold SuperMax to the more traditional ones (left and above). The gold accessories and black pads give this bike a totally different, really clean and even a modern look. But everything is original - down to the correct Shimano calipers and levers, Takagi crank and chainwheel and KKT pedals. Nicely done!

Other than adding a pair of front brake pads, Jimmy Boy hasn't touched this survivor Series II SuperMax. He doesn't need to - it still has the original Win bars, Shimano pre-bent levers and callipers, Takagi cranks and chain guard, Nitto MX2 stem, Tuffs and Tange seat post clamp. Even the tyres are original !

Rick's black and chrome SuperMax looks clean and modern - especially when put alongside the BMX Bandits inspired black and gold bikes. The bike features a Kasmix Aero seat, Skyway Tuffs, a Nitoo MX-2 stem and nice polished 3 piece cranks.
