Malvern Star SuperMax, Maxi and Speedwell Sting

While researching information for my '81 SuperMax, '83 Speedwell Sting and up-coming '79 5-Hole gusset builds, I got so sick of finding information then losing it again that I started copying images of bikes, parts and advertising material into a single place. To assist others, I have reproduced this information over the following pages .. most of the information can be found on OzBMX and BMXMuseum and I am not pretending that this informtion will replace either of these valuable resources.

Hall of Fame: Malvern Star SuperMax CrMo

The SuperMax was Malvern Star's top of the line BMX bike and was intended for 'serious' riders. Initially these bikes shared a common frame with the Maxis but by the time the CrMo version was released in '81 the two were vastly different.

Although white tyres, chains and seats are probably the most impractical items in BMX, they look stunning when fitted to a white frame. The red accessories provide a strong contrast and provide interest. This was one of the first CrMo builds I saw and influenced me to build my own.

Clayton built this bike for his son for Christmas. The bike is a mix of NOS and reproduction parts and, as such, Clayton is not too concerned if it bites the dust or so he says. I love the personalised race plates ..

Yet another of Clayton's bikes .. and it lives up to the same quality as the rest. I was planning on building a chrome frame / blue accessories / yellow pads like Kristina's (right) but looking at this all blue colour scheme I am having second thoughts .. Lucky I have both a blue and yellow NOS pad sets!

Kristina's original SuperMax CrMo differs from most in that the downtube decal is a small 'CrMo' one only rather than the full SuperMax one most have. It also has what looks like a '1' stamped into the bottom bracket with no other serial number or Redline oval .. is this a really early CrMo?

Occy restored his bike using mainly the original parts from the bike and other era correct parts such as the Dia Compe MX1000s. The fresh coat of white paint, new decals and blue anodised accessories looks great and turns heads when its out and about!

Although not quite finished, Jock's CrMo looks fantastic with its Metalcast paint job, rechromed forks and gold annodised part. To complete the build, Jock is looking to fit gold pedals and an MX2 stem, chrome WIN bars and restored wheels (red rims and gold hubs).

OzBMXBandit's 1983 Malvern Star SuperMax CrMo Turbo is almost totally original and has had little more than a polish. One of only 500 made, these bikes are quite rare and to find an complete survivor rarer still!

JV911 has two bikes in the 'Hall of Fame' - this CrMo and a nice Series II also in black. The black and gold colour scheme could be mistaken for another 'BMX Bandit' replica but unlike the colour scheme on those bikes that shouts 'look at me', the gold trim on this CrMo is used sparingly to great effect!

Dave's yellow and red CrMo is no carpet queen as these pics at the Lalor BMX track show. His ride features a host of new parts including a Nitto MX-2 Stem, Dia Compe MX-1000 brakes and Tech 4 levers mated to an original frame and fork combination and pad set.
