Malvern Star SuperMax, Maxi and Speedwell Sting

While researching information for my '81 SuperMax, '83 Speedwell Sting and up-coming '79 5-Hole gusset builds, I got so sick of finding information then losing it again that I started copying images of bikes, parts and advertising material into a single place. To assist others, I have reproduced this information over the following pages .. most of the information can be found on OzBMX and BMXMuseum and I am not pretending that this informtion will replace either of these valuable resources.

Please browse through all of the material I have collected:

If you have any Malvern Star or Speedwell information or photos, please forward them to me and I will add them to the site. I am especially interested in brochures and advertisements as these are most valuable when restoring bikes back to their original glory.

Collections

Of course, owning one of these bikes would be enough for most people. However, for some of us one is simply not enough and we aren't happy until we have at least one of each model and variation released. The holy grail for Malvern Star collectors is the SuperMax Turbo and at only 500 units makes completing the set for most collectors near impossible!

  • Jasbins

Jasbin rode a 5-Hole SuperMax back in the day and his collection reflects his passion for these bikes - he has two beautifully completed bikes and a show-stopper build in progress. Three of Jasbins bikes currently feature in the Hall of Fame and no doubt when he completes his white and blue 5-Hole gusset SuperMax it too will appear there.

    Filmote

One of the advantages of maintaining a site like this is that you can shamelessly feature your own bikes in every section whether they are the best, most appropriate or not. Anyhow, my meagre collection has two completed bikes - an '81 Malvern Star SuperMax and an '84 Speedwell Sting Crmo. I also have a NOS CrMo frame for a future Malvern Star SuperMax CrMo build and a 5 Hole gusset frame complete with Tange headset and Tange TRX forks.

    ProSixtyFour

A quick look at ProSixtyFour's profile on OzBMX shows that this guy passion for BMX is wider that just Malvern Stars. His collection includes a GT Pro Performer, a Profile XL Champ Pro, a Hutch Trickstar, a 2011 KOS Kruiser, an '85 Redline, an '81 Blue Max and these two SuperMaxes.

    UIW814

Clayton's collection of Malvern Star bikes is second to none and includes a number of beautifully restored bikes, some NOS original bikes, a couple of riders and some awaiting restoration. With this many Malvern Stars and a couple of stray Hotfoots, it is fair to say that he is totally addicted to this hobby.

    Restored Bikes
Clayton has rebuilt his childhood ride - a 5-Hole gusset SuperMax in its unique and original Silver with red accessories. This colour scheme is rarely seen but really effective and its suprising there aren't more being restored this way. The other two restored bikes were built as Christmas presents for his son and wife - a nice way of including the family in the action and taking the heat off his spending. All of these bikes have been professionally sprayed by Clayton who pays for his hobby by repairing a car or two in his panel beating shop.

    Original Bikes
The red '86 Maxi is a really clean and original example of the bikes that Malvern Star started making in Malayasia (?) once production ceased in Australia. Of the two early Maxis, the one with the black pads is another clean original example whereas the one with the red pads is awaiting in line for restoration.

    Freestyle Bikes
Later Malvern Star Freestyle bikes are also represented in the collection. The pair of Maxi Freestyles were identical, NOS originals before Clayton swapped the rims and tyres on one for more practical Tuffs and black tyres to create a rider. The pink Maxi 500C is also completely original down to the pink Viscount seat, pink Dia Compe 901s and Tech IV levers. Judging by the dropouts and the forks, this could be a Giant made bike dating from '85 or '86.

    Peccles (and Eccles)

Peccles posted these images on OzBMX on behalf of her husband Eccles. I am unsure what years they are but it looks like they have a nice collection of early 5 Hole and lugged steel SuperMaxes and Maxis. The black and gold SuperMax looks exceptional ..

    OzBMXBandit

OzBMXBandit's two bikes - an original '83 Malvern Star Maxi and a restored '81 Malvern Star SuperMax - are perfect examples of how these bikes would have looked BITD. The Maxi is the most original example I have seen and is complete down to its original Nitto MX-1 stem, Tange 28 TPI BB, Tange seat clamp and Tange MX-2 Headset. Quality parts for Malvern Star's entry-level bike!

New to the collection is this beautiful 1983 Malvern Star SuperMax CrMo Turbo that is almost totally original and has had little more than a polish. One of only 500 made, these bikes are quite rare and to find an complete survivor rarer still!

    Shane Cullen

Shane's collection of original SuperMax and Speedwells covers 5-Hole, Series II and CrMo models. All feature original pad sets, the ubiquitous MX-2 stem and enough Shimano / Takagi gear to start a museum!
