Malvern Star SuperMax, Maxi and Speedwell Sting

While researching information for my '81 SuperMax, '83 Speedwell Sting and up-coming '79 5-Hole gusset builds, I got so sick of finding information then losing it again that I started copying images of bikes, parts and advertising material into a single place. To assist others, I have reproduced this information over the following pages .. most of the information can be found on OzBMX and BMXMuseum and I am not pretending that this informtion will replace either of these valuable resources.

Please browse through all of the material I have collected:

If you have any Malvern Star or Speedwell information or photos, please forward them to me and I will add them to the site. I am especially interested in brochures and advertisements as these are most valuable when restoring bikes back to their original glory.

Decals

Malvern Star Maxi Decals

Like the SuperMax decals, the Maxi decals came in two versions - one style the 5-hole and a different one for the lugged steel frameset.

The original Maxi decals did not have the 'wrap around' top and bottom banner that adorned the later version. As such, this made fitting them much easier!

Malvern Star SuperMax Decals

SuperMax decals come in three variations matching and were applied to the three SuperMax models - the 5-Hole gusset, lugged steel and the CrMo. I do not have artwork for any of these but a number of people have reproduced them, including Glynn and others.

The SuperMax decals for the 5-Hole gusset model used a block, outlined font similar to that to those used on the lugged steel version. They lacked the top and bottom band that wrapped around the tube thus making them easier to fit!

I had an original set of these decals but fitted them to my '81 SuperMax without thinking to scan them. Glynn can produce these decals on a clear, white or black background.

If anyone has high-quality artwork and would like to make them available via this site, please contact me. I am also looking for a better (low quality) image to replace this place holder for reference only.

I have an original set of these decals but have had no luck scanning them as they are printed on a silver backing which makes scanning near impossible.

Malvern Star (Giant)

Below are some miscellaneous decals that were not destined for the SuperMax, Maxi or Sting bikes. As I get more images together, I will break out like images into sections. If you have any images you are willing to share, please send them my way ..

Giant made bikes for Malvern Star in 1980 and then again from late 1986 onwards. These early examples resemble the decals sets that were fitted to Malvern Star dragsters in the late '70s.

Speedwell Sting Decals

Speedwell differentiated their versions of the Malvern Star bikes through nothing other than the decals and padsets. The head mast decal for the CrMo frameset was very distinctive but the rising sun hints at a Japanese make event though at this stage the frames were still being made locally and even when they abroad it was to Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Sting MKI and MKII decal sets are essentially the same with (obviously) the only difference being the upper banner on the seat tube decal. I do not believe these sets came with fork decals and the Stings were shipped with the original Tange fork decals.

I also have artwork and printed decals for the MKII Sting. If you are interested in a set or a copy of the artwork, contact me and we can work out the details.

As mentioned above, the Sting MKI and MKII decal sets are essentially the same with (obviously) the only difference being the upper banner on the seat tube decal. The artwork for these decals has been created from a set of MKI decals and have not been scanned from originals.

I have artwork only for the MKII Sting. If you are interested in a set or a copy of the artwork, contact me and we can work out the details.

My first Speedwell frame had a damaged decal set on it - I carefully peeled them off, scanned and repaired the images with the results shown left. The repaired images are as good as the originals which, unfortunately, were not the best quality and show printing registration issue, especially in the seat tube decal.

I have both high-quality scans of these decals and have had Glynn print some for me. If you are interested in a set or a copy of the artwork, contact me and we can work out the details.

Malvern Star Miscellaneous Decals

The 1980 Summer Olympics were held in Moscow leading to the boycott by the USA and a number of other countries - including Australia - in protest of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Although Australia did not officially participate, our athletes were competed under the Olympic Flag. Malvern Star was an official sponsor of these athletes. Many Malvern Star bikes leading up to and after the event sported additional sponsor decals proclaiming their sponsorship.
