Schwinn Bicycles

My interest in the Giant made Hotfoot and variants available in other countries eventually lead me to the Predator range of bicycles made for Schwinn in the early to mid 80s. These bikes are classic Giant and some models are almost identical to the Hotfoots sold here in Australia. Most disappointing though for me is that these bikes seem to be higher spec than ours - look at the 24" full CrMo cruiser the US got compared to our HiTen version..

1972 Schwinn Catalogue

Like some of the catalogues before it, the 1972 catalogue is photographed around America and takes in some beautiful scenery and landmarks.

New in 1972 on page 31 are disc brakes as "Inspired by the brakes on the finest sports cars, the handlever controls a powerful vise-like grip on the steel disc for sure, safe stops. Another safety first for bicycles." Wow, my 1972 Datsun 1200 sedan had drum brakes all around - you had to get the 2 door coupe for disc brakes. What I cannot see in this disc setup is whether there is any hydraulics or whether the action is purely mechanical. Might have been hard work to pull a heavy bike up time and time again.

Page 3 contains a suspicious photo of Uncle Chester, whereas page 26 shows a group photo of people who probably wish they hadn't volunteered to parade Schwinn's new fashion.
